Tim O’Shields began as the Minister of Music and Worship at First Lutheran Church (FLC) here in 2013. At FLC Tim plans services and writes liturgies for four regular services per week. He directs the First Lutheran Church Choir, the Resurrection Choir, The FLC Hand Bell Choir, and children’s choirs when enough children are available. He also serves as worship leader for FLC’s Praise & Worship (Contemporary) Service each week. He has coordinated an Advent Recital Series called the Advent Adventure. The Advent Adventure has sometimes also featured another vision called the The Crèche Walk. The Crèche Walk displays several hundred Nativities and Crèches of all sizes and colors from all around the world. Tim has also coordinated a Lenten Recital Series called Lenten Meditations. He started an ongoing concert series called FLC Presents…, which features artists and groups from the US and around the world. Highlights have included The Young Swedish Singers, Chinese concert pianist Chi-Chen Wu, and University Choirs from Augsburg, Carthage, Augustana, and the University of Minnesota. Another special performance was the organ-cello duo from the UK that perform as the Svyati Duo. A new Albert Lea tradition has emerged and will continue each December as the choirs of FLC and full orchestra present The Hanging of the Green Advent/Christmas Concert.
Tim was born in South Carolina. Tim has a chemistry degree from Furman University in Greenville, SC. He also attended the University of South Carolina. As a young adult, he left the South for the Mid-Atlantic area and lived in Baltimore, MD, before moving to Colorado, where he spent half of his life. He spent a number of years on the Corporate Management team of the world’s largest environmental testing company. Tim traveled weekly from his home in Colorado to work with people all the over country (literally from coast to coast and from the northern borders to the southern borders) in the areas of leadership development, management training, process improvement, and client services. He moved from Colorado to serve here in FLC.
Tim released a self-titled solo piano recording in 2012, which earned his membership into the Recording Academy (The Grammy Association). He is a lifetime full-voting member for all Grammy ballots. His recording was on the first ballot for the Grammys in the 2013 Grammy Awards.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is a great fit for Tim. After serving in the Episcopal Church and the United Methodist Church before coming to Albert Lea, the next chapter of Tim’s life is to follow the calling to Pastoral Ministry in the ELCA. He began his studies toward the Master of Divinity degree at Luther Seminary in 2017, while continuing to serve full-time here at FLC.
Tim loves Albert Lea and wants the people of First Lutheran Church to know how much their acceptance, love, and support have been appreciated in his time here.
