Matt Gender is a concert organist and choir director hailing from Florida, where his family has lived since 1999. He completed his DMA and MM in Organ Performance at the University of Kansas, where he studied organ with James Higdon and choral conducting with Michael Bauer. Matt also graduated Summa cum Laude with his BM in Organ from the University of Florida, where he studied organ, harpsichord, and carillon with Laura Ellis.
Dr. Gender is a prize-winning organ improviser, winning 2nd place in the 2016 AGO National Competition in Organ Improvisation in Houston, and taking 1st place in the 2017 University of Michigan Organ Improvisation competition, in Ann Arbor. Dr. Gender tours throughout the southeast and midwest as a concert organist, and he specializes in modern organ music and improvisation. He’s also heavily involved with Electroacoustic composition, and specializes in granular and particle synthesis, and has published many works through digital platforms, including SoundCloud and Bandcamp.
Matt is thrilled for the opportunity to act as the Director of Music & Worship for First Lutheran of Albert Lea, and he hopes to expand the musical opportunities available to the citizens and parishioners of the church and town.
