HEALTH KITS FOR HAITI AND THE NEXT INGATHERING Minimize

Last summer Lutheran World Relief made an appeal for Quilts and, especially, Health Kits to help meet the demands for these humanitarian supplies for eight specific countries.   Last October at First Lutheran’s LWR Ingathering, Lutheran churches from Southern Minnesota and Northern Iowa responded by donating over 850 Health Kits, 1500 Quilts, 425 Layettes, 1600 School Kits, 145 Sewing Kits, and hundreds of bars of soap, which were delivered to the LWR warehouse in St. Paul.

After the recent earthquake in Haiti, the plea for Health Kits has become critical as LWR warehouse supplies are being depleted.  On January 19, 2010, LWR’s first of multiple planned shipments to Haiti included 650 Health Kits and 1500 Layettes from the Maryland warehouse.  Immediate plans are to send more Health Kits, Quilts, and Layettes, and then School Kits as the need arises.  Besides its financial commitment of $2.25 million for relief efforts, LWR foresees its presence in Haiti to last 3-5 years.
First Lutheran’s Social Ministry Commission hosted its Spring Lutheran World Relief Ingathering on Saturday, May 15.    Sixty-four churches (most ever donating!!) from Southern Minnesota and Northern Iowa, plus one from Bella Vista, Arkansas, nearly filled a 53-foot truck trailer with 2161 health kits (most ever collected!!), 207 school kits, 347 layettes, 258 sewing kits, 2740 quilts, along with numerous boxes of soap.   Over $2000 was also contributed to LWR for its shipping costs to needy areas throughout the world.
LWR had put out a special plea for Health Kits because of the recent devastation suffered in places such as Haiti.    Our churches responded!!    Kudos go to St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Meridan, Waseca, MN who delivered 886 Health Kits!!!

Volunteers Minimize

Volunteer workers are vital and appreciated!!  On Sunday, June 1, 2009, high school senior Jacob Winkels was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation and a gift from the Social Ministry Commission for his five years of faithful dedication to LWR.  Jacob started volunteering as a Confirmand – and, as a graduating senior, has worked at 10 consecutive In-Gatherings!

Jacob was featured in the "Faith in Action" newsletter of LWR (May 2009, Vol. 7, Issue 2). Good job!
