The Social Ministry Commission of First Lutheran Church is proud to be able to gather needed items and ship them via semi tractor trailer to the St. Paul twice a year, through Lutheran World Relief. Area churches and individuals from all over southern Minnesota and northern Iowa gather quilts & layettes; sewing kits, school kits, and health kits - all to be sent overseas to people in need. Check this site for the latest news!

Goals:
1. Serving at Loaves and Fishes Meals
2. Continue the Lutheran World Relief Clothing Drive
3. Support the Salvation Army food shelf through "Noisy Offerings"
4. Serve Coffee during the Fellowship Hour one month
5. Take part in the World Hunger Project.

The Spring Lutheran World Relief Ingathering held on Saturday, May 16, and hosted by the Social Ministry Commission, was very successful. Fifty-two area churches from Southern Minnesota and Northern Iowa delivered over 2800 quilts, 300 layettes, 250 school kits, 375 health kits, 85 sewing kits, and numerous boxes of soap. Quilts from St.Paul Ev. Lutheran Church of Willow Springs, MO, were also delivered to our site. We nearly filled the truck trailer as its doors were closed, ready to be delivered to the LWR warehouse in St. Paul.   Special thanks to Todd Kriewall of Crossroads Trailer of Albert Lea for arranging the transportation.
Sincere gratitude goes to our faithful volunteers and to the FLC custodial and secretarial staffs for the time and effort given to this project – vital keys to our success.   Our Fall Ingathering is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2009.
Voluteers Appreciated!

The Social Ministry Commission hosted its Spring Lutheran World Relief In-Gathering on May 16.  Dave Allard provided the rollers used for the loading process. The truck, trailer, and delivery of the goods to the LWR warehouse in St. Paul were provided through combined efforts of Crossroads Trailer, Pro Trucking, and Riverland Community College all of Albert Lea.

Volunteer workers are vital and appreciated!!  On Sunday, June 1, 2008, high school senior Jacob Winkels was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation and a gift from the Social Ministry Commission for his five years of faithful dedication to LWR.  Jacob started volunteering as a Confirmand – and, as a graduating senior, has worked at 10 consecutive In-Gatherings! In 2009,

Jacob was featured in the "Faith in Action" newsletter of LWR (May 2009, Vol. 7, Issue 2). Good job!
