Deep Thoughts by Tori HelgesonTori here!
As we end our fourth day in Jamaica I am still amazed at the amount of love and warmth we are given. No amount of exhaustion or heat can ruin the feeling you get when you see these kids smiles. Their laughter is infectious and it can’t help but brighten your day. Each day I get to know these kids better and the amount of drive they have to succeed gives me more and more motivation. With four days left I am more than ecstatic to dive into MAD (music and drama) camp and see God’s work in action! With love from Accompong, Tori

Day Three

Jamaca Day ThreeSunday brought a visit to a local church.  We had our first taste of the long, hot, sweaty walks common to living in the mountains for Jamaica.  We ended up going to a local United Church of Christ church.  We left at 9:00 hoping to catch a service at 9:30 at one of the churches.  We soon found out that church in the summer was later.  The first service we checked on didn’t start until 11:30.  The next church we found started at 10:30.  We decided to stay and wait for the service to start.

The service was definitely different.  Some of the youth mentioned that it was hard to understand the preacher even though he […]

Deep thoughts by Will MartinHey Whats’s up?
It’s Will and my highlight today was just being able to experience Jamaica, to see the sights the smells and even the heat. Accompong is Great, I like how friendly and down to earth the people are they are not afraid to hug you or go out of there way to simply give you a friendly hand shake. Which is great, they make you feel like they would go to the end of the earth for you which feels great! I love being here I’m starting to adapt to the way they live and thats how my day was. I hope everything is great back home as it is here! I […]

Day Two

Jamaca Day TwoGreetings from Jamaica!

Saturday was a long day of enjoying our last moments on the beach, buying the last of the needed supplies, and making our way up the mountain to Accompong Town, Jamaica.  Snorkeling was a blast and all of the youth had a great time looking for the fish swimming amongst the rocks.  We all ended up with a mouthful of saltwater at some point. 🙂

On our way up the mountain we enjoyed a “guided” tour from our driver, Otley.  He told us about different aspects of Jamaican culture and provided a few stops for us to eat some in season fruit and delicious seafood stews.  Another stop brought some drinks of coconut water […]

Day One: Arrival to Jamaica

Arrival to JamaicaWe’re in Jamaica Mon!

We finally made it to Jamaica after a long day of traveling that started at 2:30 am with a van ride to MSP, and ended with a 2 hour wait in the Customs/Immigration line.  All bags and persons are accounted for, minus a few bags of Goldfish crackers squashed en route!  Everyone was patient and took on the Jamaican attitude of going with the flow.  We are spending our first night at a hotel on the beach. We’re taking advantage of our short time here by swimming in the ocean tonight and snorkeling tomorrow before check out.  Then it will be up the mountain we go to the town of Accompong where […]

Deep Thoughts by Mal(lory) SorensonMal Speaking here…

A few of my highlights of the day was when we went to the center of town to meet Taishan. He showed us the history of Accompong and showed us around town. It was cool to see a different view of Accompong. I also bought a goat skin and oak wood drum today that I will be playing the whole two plane rides home (sorry Tori). We started the MAD camp today, Tori and I were teaching the dances, it was so cool to see all the kids dance to other songs that they’ve learned with previous groups. It’s fun to teach the kids because, they are so eager to learn. […]
