After the recent earthquake in Haiti, the plea for Health Kits has become critical as LWR warehouse supplies are being depleted. On January 19, 2010, LWR’s first of multiple planned shipments to Haiti included 650 Health Kits and 1500 Layettes from the Maryland warehouse. Immediate plans are to send more Health Kits, Quilts, and Layettes, and then School Kits as the need arises. Besides its financial commitment of $2.25 million for relief efforts, LWR foresees its presence in Haiti to last 3-5 years.

First Lutheran will be hosting its Spring LWR Ingathering on Saturday, May 15, from 7:30am to 12 noon, collecting Quilts, Health Kits, Layettes, School Kits, Sewing Kits, and Soap. Please consider sewing quilts - or assembling some kits - or collecting bars of soap – as individuals or as a group project. Instructions for making quilts, layettes, and all kits collected by LWR, along with packing instructions, can be found on its website:

We will be receiving an offering for Lutheran World Relief's efforts in helping Haitians on Sunday, January 31st with a special processional offering, and for the Sundays following through February 14th. The Church Council has set aside $7000 from the endowment funds budget to match members gifts. Please help by making a donation!
On January 31st, we received over $4500 toward Haiti! Thank you!

In the future, there may be opportunities for relief groups, mission trips, etc. During this initial rescue, and recovery state, work is best left to more professional relief workers, or we might become a burden to those actually able to help in this emergency state. In the coming months, and years, there will be plenty of opportunity and need for rebuilding. For the time being, money may be the most powerful way you can help. Lutheran World Relief is currently receiving gifts by text messaging, which has become very popular. Visit their homepage for instructions at www.lwr.org . Remember to keep the Haitian people and relief workers in your prayers!
